Islam Makhachev has voiced his support for Charles Oliveira in a potential matchup against Colby Covington, harking back to their previous encounters in the Octagon. Their history traces back to UFC 280 in October 2022 when Makhachev secured victory over Oliveira via a Round 2 submission. Oliveira, however, didn’t let this setback deter him, swiftly returning to the spotlight with a knockout triumph over Beneil Dariush at UFC 289, earning himself a rematch against Makhachev at UFC 294 in October 2023. Unfortunately, fate intervened as Oliveira sustained a nasty cut during sparring just days before the scheduled bout, prompting his withdrawal.
In Oliveira’s absence, Alexander Volkanovski stepped in on short notice, only to succumb to a head-kick knockout by Makhachev, who then proceeded to defend his title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302’s main event slated for June 1. Meanwhile, Oliveira made his comeback recently, albeit on the losing end of a split decision against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300, leading to contemplation about his future endeavors in the welterweight division, with Covington on his radar.
Makhachev, during the lead-up to UFC 302, extended his admiration for Oliveira, extending an invitation for him to train in Dagestan.
